The park is named after the industrialist Eusebio Güell who wanted to build a housing development in the style of British residential areas on a farm he had on the slopes of Mount Carmel.
Antoni Gaudi designed all the necessary infrastructures from the entrance pavilions, the market, the main square to the viaducts for vehicles and pedestrians. The project did not have the expected commercial success and Sr. Güell sold it to the Town Hall authorities who turned it into a public park in 1926.
In 1984 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
